Managing Editor – Sample News Group
Sample News Group is looking for a dynamic managing editor to lead a combined newsroom for two daily newspapers, The Morning Times in Sayre and The Daily Review in Towanda, Pennsylvania.
We are seeking someone who is passionate about providing a compelling, hyper-local product to shape the next generation of news coverage in Bradford County.
The regional managing editor will oversee production of print editions published Tuesday through Saturday, as well as maintaining a constant digital presence through breaking news, alerts and updates.
The editor is responsible for managing a staff of about 12 full-time section editors and reporters, as well as freelancers, designers and other newsroom support staff.
This is an in-person position based in Towanda. The anticipated schedule is Monday through Friday.
Responsibilities:
Provide a compelling, hyper-local product, consisting of news, feature stories, press releases and standard newspaper fare such as obituaries, police and courts, social news, and community events, as well as interesting editorial commentary — all presented in an organized, well-edited format.
Ensure that editorial deadlines are always met.
Manage a team of writers. Assign beats and assign stories, photos, pages, and special projects. Proof and edit copy. Select appropriate articles and photos. Write strong, concise headlines. Critique the newspaper with staff on a regular basis.
When space allows, strive to include a small sampling of the most important state and national news of the day. Review the daily budget from Associated Press for any critical news items from the wire.
With the assistance of the publisher, hire news staff when needed. Evaluate and supervise staff, with a focus on day-to-day productivity. Coach and discipline staff as necessary, apprising publisher of serious or chronic problem areas.
Work with the company’s other key departments and coordinate the editorial effort regarding special projects, advertising, production, circulation, marketing, and online publishing.
Paginate pages as needed.
Oversee social media production.
Brainstorm new stories, series, concepts, themes, and formats as needed.
The ideal candidate will have excellent written and verbal communication skills and will be able to multitask in a deadline-driven environment. A minimum of five years’ experience in a newspaper environment is required. Experience in InDesign software along with a knowledge of the Town News BLOX system is a plus. A four-year degree in English, Journalism, Mass Communications, or related field is preferred, but not required.
