Write clear, concise, accurate, engaging stories on tight deadlines.

Qualifications:
Proven experience in journalism, particularly in crime or legal reporting.
Strong writing and research skills.
Ability to meet deadlines and juggle multiple assignments.


This can be a 25 hour per week part time position or a full-time position that would carry a benefit package of paid vacation, sick, holidays, health insurance, company paid life insurance, dental and vision.

We are looking for a dynamic and experienced hands-on managing editor to lead our editorial team and shape the future of our newsroom.

Position Summary:
The managing editor will oversee all editorial operations, ensuring the quality, accuracy and timeliness of our content. This position reports directly to the newspaper’s publisher. The role requires a collaborative leader who is passionate about journalism, embraces innovation, and thrives in a fast-paced environment. The managing editor will also be responsible for about five to seven hours of weekly page design work and must be open to working night shift when necessary.

Responsibilities:

Lead and manage the editorial team, including reporters, editors and freelance content producers.
Oversee the planning, assignment, and execution of daily and long-term editorial content.
Ensure all content aligns with the publication’s style, tone, and ethical standards.
Collaborate with department heads to optimize workflows across print, digital, and multimedia platforms.
Monitor breaking news and ensure timely, accurate coverage.
Edit and approve content for publication, maintaining a high standard of quality.
Analyze audience metrics to guide content strategies and improve reader engagement.
Develop and implement policies, procedures and best practices for the newsroom.
Mentor and train staff, fostering professional growth and teamwork.
Work with the advertising team to coordinate the production of special projects.


Qualifications:
Bachelor’s degree in journalism, communications, or a related field is preferred but not required.
5+ years of experience in journalism, with at least 2 years in an editorial leadership role.
Exceptional editing and writing skills with a keen eye for detail.
Strong news judgment and familiarity with current events and industry trends.
Proven experience managing teams and driving editorial projects to completion.
Proficiency in digital publishing tools, analytics platforms, and social media.
Excellent organizational, communication, and decision-making skills.
Ability to thrive under tight deadlines and handle multiple priorities effectively.

The Leader Times is seeking a Sports Reporter to lead the newspaper’s print and digital coverage of local high school, college and professional sports in Kittanning. We are looking for a dynamic reporter to shape the next generation of sports coverage in Armstrong County. 

Responsibilities:
Leading coverage of local high school, college and professional sports in a deadline-driven newsroom in conjunction with the managing editor and assistant managing editor 

Writing and editing local sports coverage   

Coordination of coverage of live sports events, including at area high schools 

Maintaining existing relationships with sources and developing new sources and story pitches for comprehensive coverage   

Layout and design of pages for the Leader Times, which publishes in print Tuesday through Saturday, with an online edition Monday 


Requirements:  
Bachelor’s degree in journalism or related field or equivalent experience   

Strong writing, spelling and grammar skills, as well as an understanding of AP style and dedication to accuracy   

Proven ability to manage multiple tasks in a fast-paced, deadline-driven environment. 

Solid news judgment and a working knowledge of interpreting analytics 

Strong sense of journalism ethics   

Ability to collaborate and communicate effectively with team members.   

Proficiency on social media platforms, including Facebook, X and Instagram 

Previous experience in layout/design with Adobe InDesign or a comparable layout/design program
